However, the team here at WLTC does a great job filtering all of the WordPress related content on the web to bring the best to you. During the course of a year, this content adds up. Wayne Brent alerted us to a video called “RSS in Plain English” from a resource called The Common Craft. Right now it is on the homepage to that link. You might go there in the future and need to poke around to find it. I believe the actual link location is http://www.blip.tv/file/205570/ but I can’t verify it because the response time is so bad. It must be the hot item on the Web right now.

“RSS in Plain English” seems like a clear explanation about how you can use RSS 1.0 to subscribe to blogs and news sources. Doesn’t get into RSS 2.0, which pushes audio and video for podcasts, but if one gets the gist of how RSS works for blogs and videos, they will make the connection for podcasts.

I’ve compiled a list of what I think are 25 ways to improve your website in as little time as possible. All can be done in a matter of minutes. Now, a website is hard work and usually there are no quick fixes but this list should provide you with a few pointers to make some updates today. If you like, it can also be used as a basis for a quality check document.

I use EventCalendar to maintain family “repeating” events like birthdays and anniversaries. Let’s say it takes a bit too long to do it the way I have in the past.

I know SQL. 8)

There are probably many ways to do it. I didn’t want to deal with changing the plugin code, so let’s do it all in the database.

Here’s my submission to the EventCalendar mailing list with an example of how to automatically take care of repeating events.

Good day.

I didn't look too far back in the archives to see what prior work may be been done (1 month actually)
so my apologies if I have wandered off track.

I have a number (about 60) repeating events that I would like to keep current in my schedule.

I am willing to run a "cron" job on a daily basis to maintain the repeating events in my schedule.

I would like it if my schedule "kept track" of past events. If I use the event calendar to see the previous month it would be good if I could see the repeating events. I do not need to provide "previous" events further back than 12 months.

The net effect is that I can scroll my calendar backwards or forwards and see the repeating events.

The above can be accomplished with a bit of SQL (MySQL 4.0+) and the use of some conventional indicators in the RPT column of the schedule.

-- wp_ec3_schedule-maintenance.sql

-- 2007-06-06 - version 0.9

-- Step 1 - move all "expired" repeating events to their next scheduled date

UPDATE wp_ec3_schedule SET
start = date_add(start, interval 1 year)
, end = date_add(end, interval 1 year)
WHERE
rpt = '1'
and date_add(end, interval 0 day) < curdate()
;

-- Step 2 - remove all of our "previous" entries

DELETE FROM wp_ec3_schedule WHERE rpt = '2';

-- Step 3 - create "previous" entries

INSERT INTO wp_ec3_schedule(post_id, start, end, allday, rpt)
SELECT
  post_id
  , date_add(start, interval -1 year)
  , date_add(end, interval -1 year)
  , allday
  , '2'
FROM
  wp_ec3_schedule
WHERE
  rpt = '1'
  and (end between
       date_add(now(), interval 1 day)
       and date_add(now(), interval 1 year)
      )
  ORDER BY start
;
-- end wp_ec3_schedule-maintenance.sql

If I bundle up the SQL and execute it once a day I get exactly what I want with minimal replication and run time.
For my current 56 events I wind up with 111 rows in the schedule. It takes less than 1 second to do the update.

Comments? Suggestions?

P.S. I manually set the contents of RPT to '1' before I started all of this.

Nice. Now I have a page that contains all of my news sources.

I may have to figure out how to automate the generation and updating of the page in WordPress. Probably just dump it to a file and include that.

Welcome to Journler!
Version 2.0.1

Hi and welcome to Journler! I don’t want to keep you long, just a few words before you begin. Journler is the premier notebook and entry based information manager for the Macintosh. If you’re looking for a simple, elegant program that will keep your diary, look no further. If you need a powerful information manager than can collect your thoughts, bookmarks and media, Journler is it. Either way, Journler includes a host of features that will meet your needs.

Poke around before you get started writing. On the surface Journler is a simple enough program: create an entry on a calendar date, write your thoughts down, and maybe add the entry to a folder or two. But look a little further, around a few nooks and crannies, and you’ll find a program that is suprisingly sophisticated and capable. Journler includes stunning iLife integration, it can record audio and video, it will import years worth of rich text entries and filter them on the fly. When you’re ready, you can use Journler to blog or put linked notes on your iPod, and much more.

I hope you enjoy Journler as much as I’ve enjoyed using and developing it. If at any point you aren’t sure what to do or are confused about something, have a look at the help files via the Help menu up top. Journler Help is extensive, and you’ll learn a lot just browsing through it.

Philip Dow,
Journler developer
